As Chinese troops crossed and routed Indian border post in North East in 1962 war, President Kennedy began responding to Nehru's startling request for military equipment. He sounded Pakistan not try to fish in troubled waters by contemplating indirect support to China in opening another front with India on her western border. Ayub Khan responded that such a commitment was contingent upon a just solution of Kashmir issue. Pakistan always hinged Indo-Pak relations to Kashmir.

What made them 'Hindus' to join Militant Outfits?

It was believed that the Muslims have joined militant out fits for the sake of 'Jihad' but now Hindu Youth are also joining them in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a 'million dollar' question to answer. It is said that they either join for monetary benefits or to safe guard their community from militant strikes. But majority of the Hindus are of the view that they actually belong to a criminal lot. "It is not yet known for what they are exactly joining them" says a local Hindu of Doda.

What is the meaning and usefulness of Pakistani British community's support to the Labor Party or Prime Minister Tony Blair who never misses any opportunity to equate Kashmiri political struggle with terrorism. Although it was the government of this country in 1947 which first encouraged India to annex Jammu and Kashmir with the force of her army and later gave unqualified support to a UN sponsored plebiscite in Kashmir.

Why is the president ignoring our laws?

By Lou Dobbs. NEW YORK - With upraised right hand and left hand on the Bible, each of our presidents, from George Washington to George W. Bush, has solemnly sworn to "preserve, protect and defend" the Constitution of the United States. The American Bar Association claims President Bush has violated that oath by issuing hundreds of "signing statements" to disregard selected provisions of the laws that Congress passed and he signed.

The names of heads of various Working Groups which have been constituted pursuant to the announcement of Indian Prime Minister on the conclusion of the second round table conference in Srinagar on May 24-25 this year, were announced on July 2. The Prime Minister had said that "the five groups would further the dialogue process in the strife torn State".

The Foreign Secretary has marked the anniversary of the 7th July by saying: 'Foreign Policy differences are among the many factors manipulated by extremists to justify the terrorist attacks on London in July last year. That is why our response mattered and that is why it was watched so closely around the world. One year on has anything changed? Yes, our commitment to the values that matter most to us - liberty, tolerance and justice - has grown even stronger and deeper, as have our relationships with countries across the Islamic world, which share these common ideals.'

Kashmiri dispute and issue of identity

During and after the Delhi Conference on future of Jammu and Kashmir, issue of identity came under discussion. It was agreed that Jammu and Kashmir was multi religious and multi ethnic state, where people had more than one identity. People of the State were proud to have multiple identities, and in some cases their political allegiance was determined by tribal and ethnicity affinity rather than their religion.

Nuclear Iran on Slippery Ground

The EU envoy had a two-hour long meeting with the Iranian nuclear negotiator Larijani in Tehran. No side is expected to make public the contours of the talks.Iran has one disadvantage and the western powers plus the US have so far avoided that pitfall. Iran has taken a stance, whipped up public euphoria and got caught up in the mess. Retracing her steps would mean not only hurt ego but also a prospect of political uncertainty. The US has been holding a stick and a carrot policy towards Iran whereas the three European powers, UK, France and Germany took recourse to astute diplomacy in dealing with the nuclear issue. Russia and China have been holding an olive branch to Teheran.

Kashmiri People Have A 'Title'

I was worried about the welfare of participants who dared to travel from Gilgit and Baltistan and Pakistani Administered Kashmir to take part in the two day Kashmir Conference organised by Institute for Conflict Management (ICM) on 18th and 19th May 2006.It was pleasure to note that Pakistani authorities not only allowed these invitees to take part in the conference, but they allowed them back with out showing any anger or resentment. It is a turning point not only in the Kashmiri struggle but also in the India -Pakistan relations. I was told by one invitee from the Pakistani Administered Kashmir that none of the participants were harassed or even questioned about the conference. Some invitees were, in fact, waiting to be approached and to be asked about the conference, but they were disappointed.

Indian President has returned the OBC reservation bill, which the parliament had sent in for his assent. The government is obliged to send the bill to the president when the parliament passes it with a majority vote.Under constitutional provision, the President has a right to return the bill to the government if he wants clarification in part or in whole or if he has questions on the impact of the bill on various segments of society. Obviously, the President has some doubts and some questions. He has suggested some amendments to the draft bill.

Another 'successful' International conference on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir has ended. The organisers and the participants are all upbeat that it was a successful conference. May be it was, as I am no one to pass - on a judgment that it was not so.I have yet to hear about a conference on Kashmir which has not been 'successful', and despite these 'successful conferences' on Kashmir we are still no where near in resolving the Kashmir dispute to the satisfaction of all the parties to the dispute.

Remedying social aberrations

Recently uncovered sex scandal has rocked the city of Srinagar. A totally unacceptable social evil like this one has to be eradicated lock, stock and barrel.Societies as these have evolved are ridden with aberrations and infirmities. There is hardly a civil society in the world, which can claim to be all virtue and no vice. But then the guardians of social behavior cannot allow the aberration go unchecked. One feels that the sex scandal in Srinagar has been politicized rather than socialized. Many political strings are being pulled while demanding investigation.

Impact of Kashmir turmoil on the youth

A nation, society or class is recognized by its literature, culture and habits. These factors play a vital role in uplifting and sustaining the momentum of a civil society. A disorder in any of these disciplines afflicts as a curse does to good fortune.Destiny we may call it that Kashmir has entered sixteenth year of a turmoil that it need not endure or take upon. It could have found more authoritative ways of seeking justice for its people. The casualty of Kashmir turmoil has been the Kashmiri youth. They have been widely affected and over the years their self confidence has been on a slide and cascading to the lower ends.

Putting an end to alienation

Much has to be done to put an end to the alienation of the people of Kashmir. A decade and half of insurgency and counter insurgency has intermittently thrown up many ugly situations in which both physical and emotional alienation took its toll. No state can afford to leave a chunk of its citizenry alienated for one reason or the other. The recent letter of J&K Chief Minister to the CMs of no fewer than 11 states entreating them to deal with Kashmir traders and students with dignity and consideration is one more step in the direction of wooing the alienated people. The CM has strong argument to take this rather unusual step. He is said to have received reports that the traders from the valley who travel far and wide in the country during winter months for trading Kashmir handicrafts and Kashmiri students who have sought admission in different educational institutions in the country are reported to be put under surveillance by the local police and intelligence outfits. In the process, they feel they are subjected to unnecessary questioning and investigation.

From 34th to 9th position

Even before Pakistan emerged as an independent State on 14th August 1947, millions of people rushed to become part of that state hoping for a better future. They thought this is a 'promised land'- land of 'pure' where they will have peace and tranquility, where they will have justice and dignity.Dreams of many were shattered soon, but some still lived in hope for a better` future; and situation now is so bad that if people of Pakistan are given a choice to settle in any country of their choice, commentators believe that within weeks it will be difficult to find Pakistanis in this land of 'pure'.This, by any one's standard, is a remarkable turn around. People talk of Pakistan being a 'failed state', where there is no peace and security; and in view of some there is no future. Pakistani people are very good people, they are intelligent, hard working and very friendly, and they love their country and are prepared to sacrifice anything for its defence and future.

The Great Betrayal in Kashmir

In one of my recent articles in these columns dealing with tenuous Nepal political situation, I had promised to tell readers some insides about New Delhi's betrayal of Maharaja Hari Singh in 1947. I am not recounting this story as a pro-royalist: I have no sympathy with autocrats wherever they are. Likewise, I have never been an admirer of Maharaja Hari Singh.
